What Is The Best Recording Software?

And what is the best mixing software? I think it would be the same if you asked: "What is the best food?", or "What is the best motorbike?". It depends who you ask. There is Pro Tools, Logic, Nuendo, Cubase and Samplitude to name few. And for beginners there are several free software that you can start making music with.

What software you are using isn´t important as long as it works ok. Software should be a tool that just plain works. Yes, that may be dream life but if we get closer to that, it is enough. Computers get faster and faster, but what worries me is that new operating systems get heavier and they eat more prosessing power. Personally, I would be happy with Apple OS 9 or Windows XP, why? Because I cannot see any progress in how well all the software work in computers. Ok, maybe new Mac OSX is more stabil than OS 9, but the difference isn´t that big from my point of view.

But you can see real progress in recording software. We get better reverbs, compressors and equalisers as well as more fluent and versatile audio editing. When I started to work in recording business, 16 audio tracks was ok and 24 tracks was more like "heaven" and of course the tracks were on tape. If you wanted to add more compressors on your tracks, you had to record it to the tape or go and buy one, and they were not cheap. Now you could easily mix 30-40 audio tracks on a relatively slow computer and insert a compressor and other effects on each track. And volume and effect automating is a breeze. Well, that is progress, no matter what your software is.
